High-speed Shinkansen lines easily connect
all locations nationwide in Japan.
Moreover, limited express trains
can be used to visit famous tourist spots!
- Most of the JR trains have ordinary (economy class) cars and many of the long-distance trains have Green (first class) cars. With a Green Car PASS, you can use both ordinary and Green cars without paying additional fees, and you can use the ordinary cars with an Ordinary Car PASS without paying additional fees. For the trains, cars and facilities available, please see the table below.
- Train cars marked with ○ can be used with a JAPAN RAIL PASS.
- Additional fee will be required when using train cars marked with *.
★ Only when an [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket is purchased separately before boarding the train and used together with a valid JAPAN RAIL PASS, a "NOZOMI" or "MIZUHO" train can be used for the section and facility indicated on the purchased ticket. Please see here for details.

- You cannot use reserved seats (including Green Car) and non-reserved seats on "NOZOMI" and "MIZUHO" Shinkansen trains (★).
- There are no Green Cars on most “HIKARI” and “KODAMA” trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen line (Shin-Osaka−Hakata), on some “SAKURA” and “TSUBAME” Series 800 trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen line, and on all "KAMOME" trains on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen line.
- It cannot be used for “TRAIN DESK” cars on the Tōhoku, Hokkaido, Jōetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines (starting from the sales on April 1, 2023).
- When using a "DX Green" (JR Kyushu) or Premium Green (JR East), it is necessary to pay a separate limited express charge and applicable "DX Green" or "Premium Green" surcharge.
Also, when using a "36+3" or "Shikoku Tosa Toki no Yoake no Monogatari (Kirameki no Sho/Yuhi no Sho)," it is necessary to pay a separate limited express charge and applicable Green Car surcharge for “36+3” or "Shikoku Tosa Toki no Yoake no Monogatari (Kirameki no Sho/Yuhi no Sho)". - If you use the GranClass car, only the basic fare is covered with your JAPAN RAIL PASS for both Green Car and Ordinary Cars and you are required to pay the limited express charge and the GranClass car surcharge additionally.
- Cars for passengers traveling with children on the Tokaido Shinkansen line and the S Work cars on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines are not covered.
- Shinkansen Ordinary Private Compartments are available on some of the "HIKARI" trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line.
- Green Private Compartments are available on certain limited express trains, such as SAPHIR ODORIKO.
- Use of “Home Liner” and other “Liner” trains requires payment of an additional charge.
